John and Sarah Darcus were not wealthy by the world’s standards, but they were rich in something more valuable: generosity, wisdom, and compassion.

John was a coal miner, working long, dangerous hours underground. But even in the toughest of times, he fought for fairness, safety, and dignity for his fellow miners. His leadership in the United Mine Workers of America ensured miners were paid fairly and that they had protections for their health and retirement. His decades of service left a legacy of advocacy and justice.

Sarah, meanwhile, created a legacy rooted in hospitality and faith. Known as “Mother of the Church” at Good Hope Baptist Missionary Church, she led with grace and compassion. Her kitchen table was never empty. She fed neighbors, friends, students, and strangers alike. Her kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Though neither John nor Sarah had the chance to attend college, they deeply valued education. They saved and sacrificed to help others buy books, pay tuition, and reach their goals. They believed that knowledge was the key to becoming your best self—and they encouraged everyone they knew to pursue it.

The Foundation was created in 2021 to honor their legacy. Every scholarship awarded is another chapter in their story, a way of saying: “We believe in you, just as John and Sarah believed in so many.”
